Lifelong Learning For Adults
How do we dip into the deep well of Jewish thought and practice to illuminate our lives today?
At Beth Am, we’re questioners and learners. We’re up for an intellectual thrill, a spiritual exploration, or a moral challenge. No matter how much you know or don’t know about Judaism, Beth Am Israel is your place to learn.

Questions of identity, free expression, and the lines between church and state have always been sources of tension in America, especially for Jews. Today, productive conversations on such issues seem particularly difficult. This program series addressed contemporary hot-button topics from an educational standpoint, with a variety of perspectives from local and national experts.
BAI was thrilled to welcome Dr. Galeet Dardashti, singer, songwriter, trailblazing artist and scholar to our community. Galeet led prayer and song, spoke on Middle Eastern Music and performed with her incredible all-female ensemble, Divahn. It was an incredible weekend!

Antisemitism has been a threat for centuries, but it manifests in different ways in every generation. Why do attacks on Jews seem to have renewed prominence today? This series examines how the current political, cultural, and technological environment nurtures new forms of antisemitism and hate speech. Our hope is that better understanding the contemporary challenges we face will help us confront them more effectively.
Our collective thanks to Steve Weitzman and Kevin Werbach, Co-Chairs of our Lifelong Learning Committee, for organizing these vitally important sessions.

Beth Am Israel launched a new project called, “Artist Space”, where creators of all kinds -musicians, songwriters, composers of prayer- can come to create, workshop, road test and collaborate. Our first guest was Rabbi Kelilah Miller who shared with about 20 of us some of her latest original prayer melodies. It was an inspiring and uplifting night!

Daf Yomi
Weekly on Tuesdays at 8:30 pm
So let’s say you want to read (or study or ‘learn’) the entire Babylonian Talmud, at a pace of a page a day! Here’s the math. The standard printed edition of the Talmud consists of 2,711 pages. That’s seven and a half years’ worth of daily pages. That pattern, established a century ago, is known as ‘Daf Yomi’ (literally ‘daily page’). The current cycle began this past January, and since then we’ve been gathering once a week to take a look at one of that week’s designated pages. Plan to join us on Tuesday evenings at 8:00 for a taste of Talmud. Check out this article to learn more about Daf Yomi. No prior knowledge or experience required.

Hazzan Harold offers a guided tour of the Kabbalat Shabbat Service. Classes will highlight one major part of our service. In between our meetings, participants are invited to meet up with a study partner and find time to meet for further study and conversation between sessions. Participants will also be invited to keep a ‘prayer journal’ and tune-in and notice when life gets ‘prayerful’. Be part of our class and explore the practical, the mystical, and the musical nature of prayer.
Open to all levels of practice and knowledge, this is a class rated “E” for everyone.

Mussar Year 1
Mussar Year One
The Institute for Jewish Spirituality (IJS) Tikkun Middot program takes a contemporary approach to Mussar, incorporates mindfulness and endeavors to make Mussar concepts accessible to all. This year, Rabbi David and Marci Wilf offer a small group study program to explore and practice “Middot”, or character traits, with the intention of developing new ways of being and interacting that can transform our relationships and how we live our lives. The program will use a variety of techniques and materials, including working together to learn from each other in a va’ad (group) and studying with a chevruta partner one-on-one between monthly va’ad meetings.
For those who have completed a year of Tikkun Middot
Advanced Mussar Class
Advanced Mussar Class
For those who’ve completed a year of ‘Tikkun Middot’- This years’ curriculum will include: a review of some of the “core” middot, likely with a new approach to each; the addition of a few new middot that neither group has yet studied; reading and discussion of the writings of some of the traditional Mussar masters to challenge us and deepen our understanding of Mussar practice.
