A spirited, musical gathering that transitions us out of our busy week and into the peacefulness of Shabbat. This participatory service is casual, heartfelt, and alive with music, prayer, and community. Come as you are to enjoy beautiful Sabbath melodies that invite everyone in, whether it’s your first time or your hundredth.
Bring an instrument if you’d like or pick up a drum on the way down the sanctuary aisle. Sing along. Or simply be present and welcome Shabbat together.
Friday evenings from 6:00-7:00pm. In-person and via Zoom.
Shabbat Mornings at BAI
Whether you’re drawn to traditional melodies, the depth of prayer, or the warmth of community, you can honor Shabbat your way at BAI.
Torah Study
Start your Shabbat morning with an engaging exploration of the weekly Torah portion. Guided by Rabbi David, who brings in classical sources and modern commentary, these participatory sessions spark deep, open conversations that bring traditional text to life through modern and diverse voices, backgrounds and perspectives. Come ready to learn, to share, and to reflect.
Saturday mornings from 9:30-10:15am. In-person and via Zoom.
Tefilah B’Kavanah (Prayer with Intention)
A contemplative, joyful Shabbat morning experience to wake up your body, quiet your mind, and open your heart to Shabbat with musical prayer. Led by Hazzan Harold, this participatory service (pick up a drum or guitar or simply join with your voice or presence) offers wordless melodies, mindful breathing, and moments of meditative silence.
When the weather is just right, we gather in the Ya’ar, our beautiful outdoor woodlands, surrounded by trees, sky, and fresh air.
Saturday mornings from 9:30-10:15am. In-person and via Zoom.
Shabbat Morning Services
Our Shabbat Morning Services blend familiar Hebrew liturgy, time-honored melodies, and congregational connection. Members chant Torah and Haftorah, creating a joint moment of ritual and meaning. The weekly D’var Torah (Torah teaching) offers fresh insight and learning, often sparking thoughtful conversation and spiritual reflection.
Saturday mornings from 10:15-11:45am. In-person and via Zoom.
“Something Different” Shabbat Morning Experience
One Shabbat morning a month, we swap out our regular Shabbat offerings and blend tradition with creativity as we invite our community to explore new ways of connecting with Tefilah (prayer), Torah, and one another. Co-created by our clergy, professional staff, and congregants, the “Something Different” experience offers new ways to celebrate Shabbat. This can include:
- Expanded, music-filled tefillah with the Interfaith Music Project of Philadelphia
- Alternative ways to study Torah with “Hands-On Torah”: dynamic learning sessions, scholars, new perspectives, and even a competitive “Sermon Slam”
- Mindfulness practices incorporated into traditional prayer
- Experimental and contemplative music and melodies
- Relaxed social time with light fare built into the morning
Rabbi David’s Reflections
Each week, Rabbi David shares a Shabbat message with the BAI community via email, and they are posted here for the broader community. Whether drawing insight from the weekly Torah portion, commenting on current events, or sharing personal experiences, Rabbi David brings a thoughtful perspective that speaks to the heart and soul of our daily lives as modern Jews in America.
